Termination Electrodes Ceramic INTRODUCTION Varistors find their application in the field of overvoltage protection. As disc type leaded devices, they have been in use for many years with high reliability. A switching time of a few nanoseconds and down to picoseconds (depending on type), plus a high energy absorption capability gives these varistors a marked advantage over diodes of the same size. The use of disc varistors is limited due to their size and the fact that they are not suited for low voltage applications, especially in the field of micro-electronics. Vishays new generation of varistors brings the advantages of surface mount technology (SMT) to varistor applications. Customers have come to rely on the quality of Vishay capacitors. SERIES VV Metal Oxide Varistors FEATURES Small size, surface mount geometry. The development of these varistors was based on Vishay Vitramons successful multilayer technology. The material is a ZnO ceramic combined with several metal oxide additives. The ZnO grains are semiconductive by n-type doping. The varistor effect takes place across varistor active grain boundaries with a breakdown voltage of 3.5 V. The number of grain boundaries determines the operating voltage. This is the reason why multilayer technology is ideally suited for low voltage varistor applications. The manufacture of SMD varistors is based on the same proprietary Wet Buildup process used for production of our MLC capacitors. Vishays demand for uniformity and quality in raw materials and Statistical Process Control in manufacturing assures reproducible performance. Variation in design, especially size and layer thickness, enables the production of parts for almost every customer application.
