underplate of 50 to 150 microninches thick. The gold plating system shal l enabl e the product to
m eet the per for mance r equirements of this specific ation and shal l be approved by the quali fy ing
activity.

Tr ansi ent voltage limits (output): In accordanc e with MIL- S TD-461 (methods CE106 and RE103) ,
voltage spikes generated by t ime delay r elays shall not ex c eed 42 volts duri ng the following time
periods starting at the instant of opening of the rel ay coil circuit:
PIN’s wit h a suffi x letter W: 50 microseconds.
PIN’s wit h a suffi x letter A: 500 mi croseconds.
Monitoring of spike vol tages shall be by a devic e ( such as a mem or y type oscilloscope) that c an detect,
m easure, displ ay , and record 0.25 to 1000 volts over the appli c able time durat ions specif ied herein.
Swit c hes used to cont r ol the time delay relays during voltage-spi k e measurements shall not be EMI
suppressed.
Time current rel ay c har ac teri stics at 25°C: 6/ Relay s shall sustain five applic ations (make and car r y
only) of power concurrently on adjacent poles at each of five different c ur r ent level s for the ti me
durations shown in table IV . Separat e r elays shall be tested at 28 V dc and 115/200 V ac, 400 Hz , 3
phase. Cool ing time between successive applicat ions shal l be 30 minutes. The t est shal l be perfor med
on both normall y open and nor mally c losed contacts of eac h r elay. There shall be no fai lures or
evidence of welding or sti c k ing, and r elays shall pass contac t voltage drop at conclusion.

specified in MIL-STD-1285.
ESDS protection program: Th e man ufacturer shall establish an d maintain an ESD control program in
accordance with MIL-STD-1686 for mission critical equipment. Evi dence of such compliance shall be verified
by the qualifying activity of this specification as a prerequisite for qualification and continued qualification. This
program shall be documented by an ESD con trol plan that must be under document control. As a minimu m,
this plan must address the iden tification of ESDS sub-components and preservation, packaging, an d quality
assurance. A model ESD control program is availabl e from the qualifying activity and may be u sed as a
guideline. Fu rther gui dance for ESD control is avail able from the EDS/ESD Association and th e El ectronics
Indus try Association (EIA). Thi s requirement is appli cable to all manufacturers who hand le ESDS component
parts and materials in th e relay manufacturing or testing process. This requirement is not limited to
manu facturers qualifying ESDS end items .
ESDS verification: As a part of qual ification or qualification after redesign, ESD testing shall be done in
accordance with method 3015 of MIL-STD-883 modified to test at 16,000 volts. Testing at lower voltage
levels is not required. This testing shall be accomplished as part of the group III for qualification inspection and
as part of the group C inspection .

ESDS pr eservation and packaging: Relays shall be preserved and packaged in such a m anner as to
ensure that the integri ty of ESD sensit ive r elays is not diminished. ESD sensitive relays shal l be
preserved and pac k aged in accor danc e with the requirements of MI L-STD- 1686.
PIN: Consists of the prefix M83726/18- , a four-digit dash number ( expressed in milliseconds), and a
suffix letter ( indicating the extent of EMI requir ement s) as follows:

Quality assurance provisions: G r oup B and gr oup C testing ar e not required. The
m anufac turer shal l notify t he quali fy ing act ivity in the event of any desi gn or c onst r uc tion
changes, and shall i mpose additional testing requirements as necessar y .
The Q ualif ied Pr oduc ts List (Q P L) associated with this i nac tive for new desi gn specific ation
will be maintained until acquisit ion of the pr oduc t is no l onger r equired, whereupon the
specificat ion and the QPL will be canceled.
